DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGY

Founded in 1955, the Department of Geology was fully established in the august campus of the then University of Pune in 1971. The Department is well equipped with basic and advanced facilities including sophisticated thin section and polishing lab (Buehler), several optical microscopes (Nikon, Leica, Zeiss), XRF (Panalytical), ICP-OES (Shimadzu), XRD (Rigaku), Microwave digestion, Millipore and a full fledged Palaeomagnetic and Sedimentology Lab. The Department is recognized under DST-FIST (Level III) and UGC SAP-DRS-2. It has produced a vast alumni of renowned researchers, scholars, administrators, academicians and eminent geologists affiliated with prestigious organizations and universities in India and abroad. Students are placed in reputed petroleum companies like Schlumberger, Weatherford, Petrolink Data Services, many geotechnical and mining companies, various hosting institutions and government organizations. The Department has produced over 125 Ph.D's and many books, monographs and research publications in specialized and emerging fields of the Earth Sciences.

IAS CONVENTION AND NATIONAL CONFERENCE

We cordially invite you to the 41st Convention of the Indian Association of Sedimentologists (IAS-2025) and the National Conference on Sedimentology with emphasis on the "Impact of Deccan Volcanism on Sedimentation, Stratigraphy, Climate and Tectonics" (IDSSCT). The conference will be held from 6th to 8th November 2025 at the Department of Geology, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune. Total 11 major themes are proposed with diverse disciplines in the field of Sedimentology and Stratigraphy incorporating multidisciplinary approaches with the special emphasis on Deccan Volcanism. Our primary idea is to bring experts, scientists, researchers, academicians, and industry professionals from various sub-disciplines of sedimentology on a common platform to discuss the nuances of sedimentary processes, environment and energy resources; and facilitate the exchange of innovative ideas for better future. The conference will feature plenary sessions, keynote addresses and oral and poster presentations on the proposed themes. Post-conference field excursions will be arranged. The conference is expected to contribute to the advancement of Sedimentological research, promote sustainable utilization of sedimentary resources and enhance our understanding of processes and mechanisms in a global context.

Sedimentology plays a pivotal role in understanding the Earth's history, origin and evolution of life. The recent cataclysmic shifts in trends in the energy and mineral sectors, environmental issues, geological hazards and geotechnical infrastructure development needs great feedback from the experts in sedimentology. The impact of Deccan Volcanism on sedimentary processes demands special attention. New approaches and new data in isotope geology, geochronology, provenance tracking and geochemical terrain have enriched Indian sedimentology in recent years, which needs to be discussed and proliferated. This conference intends to deliberate on all these aspects to attract younger sedimentologists and enhance the status of Sedimentology in the country. For detailed information about the conference, please visit IAS website: www.indiansedimentologists.com

ABSTRACTS AND FULL PAPERS

The conference will feature oral presentations, poster presentations and invited talks by renowned scientists and experts. Abstracts with a maximum limit of 500 words, formatted in A4 paper size, Times New Roman font, size-12, and spacing 1.5, with normal margins of 1" on all sides, on the proposed conference themes should be sent to the Convener/Organizing Secretary by filling registration form on/before 15-09-2025. Poster templates should be in A0 size (118.9cm x 84.1cm) and should include the title, author(s) with affiliation(s) and email, followed by introduction, objective, methodology, results, conclusions and/or discussion, references and acknowledgment. Accepted abstracts will be published in the pre-conference abstracts volume and made available to registered delegates. Papers presented at the conference will be considered for publication in the Scopus Indexed Journal/UGC listed Journal of Indian Association of Sedimentologists. Delegates are required to submit full paper(s) in the format of the Journal of IAS online (www.indiansedimentologists.com).
