About the Workshop

Centre for Publication Ethics (CPE), Savitribai Phule Pune University is organizing a one day workshop on patents exclusively for Ph.D. students. This workshop is designed to equip new researchers with a deep understanding of patents. Through engaging and interactive sessions, participants will explore the fundamentals of patents, gaining insights into what can be patented and how their innovative ideas can be protected. The workshop is an important opportunity for Ph.D. students to learn more about intellectual property. It encourages an innovative culture and makes sure that their valuable research is safeguarded for future advancements and commercial exploitation. Esteemed IP professional Prof. Raj Hirwani, will share practical advice, explaining the ins and outs of applying for patents and offering helpful tips on how to use patent information for planning research and create strong patent portfolio and research papers. As a respected figure in the industry, he is well-versed in the complexities of the patent management process. His presence adds significant value to the workshop, ensuring that participants receive practical and expert advice to enhance their understanding of patents.

  • An issued patent will be taken and each element of data will be explained with its significance.

  • Utility of patent information for R&D management, Competitive Intelligence, Technology Monitoring, Techno-legal studies will be demonstrated with case studies

  • Dr. Raj Hirwani

  • Dr. Raj Hirwani has more than 40 years of techno-commercial experience in Research and Industry. He is Alumnus of ICT and holds a Ph.D. in Technology Management from IIT, Mumbai. He is a Fulbright Scholar and was recipient of Hubert Humphrey Fellowship in Technology Policy and Management. His focus is on IP Management in Academic and publicly funded R&D Institutions. He retired from CSIR as Head of Intellectual Property Directorate and Director of CSIR’s Unit for Research and Development of Information Products (URDIP) at Pune. He has been actively involved in the research, training and practice of IP Management activities in the public and private sector. He pioneered the Patent Analytics services in the country. Before this he was Head of Research Planning and Business Development Division at National Chemical Laboratory, Pune where he was involved with pre-research appraisal and techno-economic evaluation of projects, IPR Management, technology transfer and business development. He has travelled world over in a number of countries on official assignments. Currently he is Adjunct Professor, IIT, Mumbai at DS School for Entrepreneurship where he teaches and mentor’s student startups. He is also Chief Mentor at Hirwani Innovation and Learning Labs which helps students in ideation and pre-incubation of new ideas.
