Savitribai Phule Pune University (formerly University of Pune) was established on February 10, 1949 under the Poona University Act. The university houses 52 academic departments. It is popularly known as the 'Oxford of the East'. It has about 307 recognized research institutes and 950 affiliated colleges offering graduate and under-graduate courses. The university attracts many foreign students due to its excellent facilities.
School of Education (SoE) is one of the first schools to be established in SPPU under the scheme Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching, through MHRD, Government of India. Under the School of Education, the Centre for Disability and Inclusive Education, Centre for Teaching support & Innovation are working in reputed areas and Yoga Studies. The functions of the SoE, within the broad framework of the objectives of SPPU are to carry out academic activities addressing education as a field of knowledge and an area of practice
The Department of Education & Extension (DEE) was established in 1990 in the university campus with an aim of being a research and higher learning centre in the area of Education and Educational Sciences, Special Learning and Teacher Education. Since its inception, the DEE continued to forge ahead relentlessly for both horizontal and vertical expansion with consolidation of research and teaching activities. Now, this has grown to a premier institution at the national level in the field of teacher education and research. DEE offers various courses, such as; M.Ed. from 2002, M.A. Education from 2009, M.Phil. (Education) from 2006, Ph.D. – Education and Ph.D. - Educational Interdisciplinary.
The Department of Physical Education was established on July 07, 2008. The Department aims of research and higher education learning in the area of Yoga; Physical Education & other relevant areas in the field of games and sports. Department offers various courses such as; M.P.Ed., M.A.(Yoga), M.Phil., Ph.D., certificate course in Yoga Education & Certificate course in Gym Instructor & Gym Management.
The National Adult Education Programme was launched by Government of India on October 2, 1978. The responsibility and the vital role given to the Universities in the NAEP was very much instrumental in upgrading the Centers for Continuing Education in various Universities as Departments of Lifelong Learning and Extension. This trend was accepted by the authorities at University of Pune.
Indian Association of Teacher Educators (IATE) the oldest and leading professional body of teacher educators of India was established on 25th Nov, 1950 at MS University of Baroda due to initiatives of eminent educationists like late Prof. T. K. N. Menon, Late Prof. Hansa Ben Mehta and Late Prof. S.N. Mukerjee. It was registered under Societies Registration Act in 1966. IATE has been playing significant role in providing a platform to teacher educators of India and neighboring countries for meaningful deliberations on various issues related to education system in general and teacher education in specific. It has made ventures in influencing policy decisions in shaping teacher education programme in the country. Organization of annual conferences, national and international seminars and workshops as well as publication of its journal are some of the regular features of IATE. Currently it has life membership of more than 2,000 covering different regions of the country.
