Savitribai Phule Pune University (formerly University of Pune), one of the premier universities in India and popularly known as the 'Oxford of the East’, is positioned in the North-western part of Pune city. It was established in, 1949 and houses 46 academic departments, 307 recognized research institutes and 612 affiliated colleges offering research, graduate and under-graduate courses. The university is equipped with state of the art research facilities successfully producing postgraduates and doctors of excellent caliber, well-informed about the state of art technologies.. According to Times Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking, Savitribai Phule Pune University has been ranked No. 2 among the top universities in India and has received “University with Potential for Excellence” status by UGC, New Delhi. The university has exceptionally beautiful and picturesque campus. The research in diverse areas of sensors and Intelligent instrumentation, hybrid system design for non renewable energy harvesting, smart space management systems, antenna design, wireless sensor networks and IoT based system design, radio astronomy and instrumentation nano materials and related applications. Research in diverse areas, micro fluidics and solar cells is being carried out.
The Department of Politics and Public Administration was established in 1949. It is one of the oldest departments of the University. The Department had already implemented three phases (1991-2007) of the UGC's Special Assistance Programme (SAP). The UGC has also recognized the Department as Centre for Advanced Studies (CAS). It is one of the only two departments in the country recognized so for Phase II (2015-2020) with 'State and Democracy in India in the Global Context' as thrust area.
Pune is of one of the metro cities of India and is known as “Oxford of the East”. It is well connected by road, rail and air.
