We are pleased to welcome you for a National Conference on Contours of India’s Civilizational Identity on the occasion of Diamond Jubilee year of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU). We request you to grace the event and participate actively to make the conference successful.


Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) is one of the premier universities in India. It is located in the North – Western part of Pune city and occupies an area about 411 acres. The SPPU was established on 10th February 1949 under the Poona University act. The university houses 46 academic departments, has about 307 recognized research institutes and 612 affiliated colleges offering graduate and post-graduate courses. It is popularly known as ‘Oxford of the East'.

About the Department

Department of Sanskrit and Prakrit is one of the oldest departments of the SPPU. The department has an enriched legacy of erudite academicians which started with the internationally famous Vedic scholar Dr. R. N. Dandekar. The same was continued with many others such as Prof. S.D. Joshi, Prof. V.N. Jha and Prof. Saroja Bhate. There is an equally strong tradition of the alumni who are associated with various academic institutes worldwide.

About Prabodhan Manch, Pune

Prabodhan Manch, Pune is established 20 year back in Pune and had been engaged in organizing lectures featuring scholars and thinkers in the fields of social issues, philosophy, education, and economics. The major motivation for this is to discuss the topics of national and social importance and disseminate valuable knowledge and information. It also hosts seminars, workshops, symposiums, and conferences that are focused on addressing the needs of the society and the nation.

Theme of the Conference

A country with a distinctly civilizational identity like India needs to be enquired and studied primarily through its civilizational character visible through its distinct cultural unity. This common cultural consciousness is reflected across India through from its spiritual and philosophical traditions, its customs, literature, folk lore etc. An inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary study of India’s civilizational existences is a pre-requisite to develop an understanding of India.

The proposed conference attempts to do precisely that. Through Lectures, special sessions and technical sessions, the two-day conference deliberates upon the sources and reflections of India’s civilizational identity and its common cultural consciousness. It seeks to bring experts, researchers and students on the same platform to collectively ponder on the issue of India civilizational identity and ways to study and enquire into those.

For the technical sessions, scholars can send their abstracts for their papers, and selected ones will be invited to speak in the technical session. For the same, the abstracts on the following themes. These are indicative themes, and scholars can send abstracts of the papers beyond these themes as well, but relevant to the overall theme of the National Conference.

Conference Registration Details

It is mandatory for presenters and participants to register in order to attend the conference. There are no registration fees for the under-graduate and post-graduate students. For others, the registration fees are as follows –

PhD Scholars Rs. 300/-
Full Time faculty, Academicians Rs. 500/-
