About Us

Department of Microbiology

The Department of Microbiology, University of Pune was established in 1977. It is now widely recognized as Centre of Excellence in Microbiology both with respect to teaching and research. The Department presently runs three academic programmes, namely M. Sc. (Credit Course), M. Sc. (Part Paper Part Research) and the Doctoral programme.

In the wake of the New Education Policy 2020, the department continues to maintain its mission to advance the cause of higher education and create a centre of Academic Excellence in the field of education and research in Microbiology.

Centre for Molecular Diagnostics and Research

The Centre for Molecular Diagnostics and Research was set up with a goal to provide a dedicated BSL2+/ BSL3 facility to strengthen research in the area of infectious and non-infectious diseases of importance to public health, agriculture and environment. The CMDR began as a COVID testing centre that ran on a volunteer basis during the pandemic. The centre is well equipped with advanced instrumentation to facilitate the translation of the research ideas into practical applications.

    • This module was Full of Knowledge, and Practical Skills

      • As an undergraduate microbiology student, I got to know about so many new topics and about various machinery. It completely exceeded our expectations and will definitely benefit in our future. It was a very engaging and informative workshop.
      • The overall experience was amazing and very engaging, the instructions provided, the practical done everything was very good and I am satisfied with everything. Ekta ma'am was extremely helpful and good at teaching all the material. I hope such workshops are organised more often. It was a wonderful and knowledgeable experience.
      • Increased our efficiency in handling lab equipment and learn various mechanisms of plasmid isolation, digestion and now cloning. Enjoyed and learnt many new and interesting techniques and things about various Molecular and Microbial Biotechnology as we wished and expected to learn about! Thanks to our trainer, Ekta Ma'am! She engaged with us very well and did not make us feel left out for even a second.
      • The experience was great. I learnt lot of new things. When it comes to basic skills in Molecular Techniques, it is important to focus on the sensitivity of the techniques. And I really felt happy after getting good results. The guidance we received was great.
      • Got a very good idea as to how PCR works & on process of cloning.
