About Savitribai Phule Pune University

Savitribai Phule Pune University, one of the premier universities in India, is positioned in the North-western part of Pune city. It occupies an area of about 411 acres. It was established on 10th February 1949 under the Poona University Act. The university houses 46 academic departments. It is popularly known as the 'Oxford of the East'. It has about 307 recognized research institutes and 612 affiliated colleges offering graduate and under-graduate courses.

The university attracts many foreign students due to its excellent facilities. It offers good accommodation facility. There is a provision of a hostel for the students. There is a well-stocked library containing plenty of books regarding various subjects. The university offers different scholarships to the students. The university conducts seminars and conferences for the students.

About Design Innovation Centre

  • Design Innovation Centre (DIC) at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), Pune has been funded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) under the scheme “National Initiative for setting up of Design Innovation Centres, Open Design School & National Design Innovation Network” with the date of sanction 31st March 2015.
  • DIC is an inclusive platform for all with the barrier-free living process.
  • DIC aims at nurturing the curious minds with design opportunities of the real-life to innovate; design; make; test and conclude with an understanding.
  • The vision of DIC is to Ideate, Incubate, Implement an Idea.
  • Creating technologically equipped thought and action leaders in a wide range of spheres by providing value-based and high-quality education.
  • Establishment of Intellectual Property(IP) Cell.

About SPPU Research Park Foundation (SPPU RPF)

SPPU Research Park Foundation is a section 8 company fully owned by Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU). It is established to promote research-based entrepreneurship as well as providing a co-location facility to industry for Research and Development. It is a ‘gateway’ for SPPU to take the research to industry and society at large. It provides an opportunity for industry and academia to come and work together for addressing the challenges of mutual interests. SPPU Research Park Foundation provides opportunities for students for skill enhancement through working on real-life problems, carry out research towards their academic fulfillment, gain practical experience and employment prospects by working on cutting edge technologies.

About the Institution’s Innovation Council


Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Govt. of India has established ‘MHRD’s Innovation Cell (MIC)’ to systematically foster the culture of Innovation amongst all Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). The primary mandate of MIC is to encourage, inspire and nurture young students by supporting them to work with new ideas and transform them into prototypes while they are informative years.

MIC has envisioned encouraging the creation of ‘Institution’s Innovation Council (IICs)’ across selected HEIs. A network of these IICs will be established to promote innovation in the Institution through multitudinous modes leading to an innovation promotion eco-system in the campuses.

The major focus of IIC

To create a vibrant local innovation ecosystem. Start-up supporting Mechanism in HEIs. Prepare institute for Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements Framework. Establish Function Ecosystem for Scouting Ideas and Pre-incubation of Ideas. Develop better Cognitive Ability for Technology Students.

Functions of IICs
  • To conduct various innovation and entrepreneurship-related activities prescribed by Central MIC in a time-bound fashion.
  • Identify and reward innovations and share success stories.
  • Organize periodic workshops/ seminars/ interactions with entrepreneurs, investors, professionals and create a mentor pool for student innovators.
  • Network with peers and national entrepreneurship development organizations.
  • Create an Institution’s Innovation portal to highlight innovative projects carried out by the institution’s faculty and students.
  • Organize Hackathons, idea competition, mini-challenges, etc. with the involvement of industries.
